What Makes Puppy Linux Different

Puppy Linux is unique for the following reasons:

  • It is a single user system therefore no username or pasword is required. You just put a Puppy Linux Live Disc in the drive, reboot and enjoy!
  • The user runs as root therefore you work on the system just like you did in Windows without any special login or password.
  • You do not need to prepend every command you issue in the console with special commands.
  • As no special commands are needed you learn how to use Linux commands faster.
  • Puppy Linux runs completely in RAM making it the fastest GUI operating system on earth.
  • After booting a Live Disc you may remove the disc thus freeing up the drive for other uses (unmount Live Disc first).
  • When you first boot Puppy Linux Live Disc you may choose to perform an Automated Save File Install. From then on every time you boot with the Live Disc you can save files, folders and system settings in a persistent form. You can even install software! From the user’s point of view this is the functional equivalent of a normal install except that the only change made to your computer is that two files are created on the hard drive. If you wish to remove Puppy Linux from your computer all you need do is delete these two files. This is a far safer way to use Linux in a persistent form because it virtually eliminates any risk of data loss from user error as might happen during a full install.
  • If you boot from a Live USB flash drive you can use it as described in the previous paragraph and save all your files and system settings to that drive. You can even install software!
  • If you boot from a Live Multi-Session DVD you can use it as described in the previous paragraph and save all your files and system settings to the disc. You can even install software!
