Five Ways to Boot Puppy Linux
1. Save File Install
Boots from Live Disc: User files, add-on software and system changes made by user are retained in save file.
Requirements:
- BIOS must support booting from optical drive
- Puppy Linux is stored on Live Disc
- Save file is stored on hard drive
Portability:
- Not portable due to save file location
2. Multi-Session Live Disc
Boots from Live Disc: User files, add-on software and system changes made by user are retained in save file.
Requirements:
- BIOS must support booting from optical drive
- Puppy Linux is stored on Live Disc
- Save file is stored on Live Disc
- Computer must have optical drive with burning capability
Portability:
- Fully portable if computer has optical drive with burning capability to update changes to save file.
3. Flash Drive
Boots from Flash Drive: User files, add-on software and system changes made by user are retained in save file.
Requirements:
- BIOS must support booting from Flash Drive
- Puppy Linux is stored on Flash Drive
- Save file is stored on Flash Drive
Portability:
- Fully portable
4. Frugal Install
Boots from hard drive: User files, add-on software and system changes made by user are retained in save file.
Requirements:
- Boot manager such as Grub (if other operating system is present)
- Linux partition for Grub
- Puppy Linux is stored on hard drive
- Save file is stored on hard drive
Portability:
- Not portable. All files are stored on hard drive.
5. Full Install
Boots from hard drive: User files, add-on software and system changes made by user are retained in same manner as other Linux operating systems.
Requirements:
- Boot manager such as Grub (if other operating system is present)
- Linux partition for Grub
- Puppy Linux is stored on hard drive
Portability:
- Not portable. All files are stored on hard drive in similar manner as other Linux operating systems.
