ROX-Filer File Manager can manage files on Windows computers even if they are unbootable. You can copy data with ROX-Filer to functional internal or external drives or burn them to optical disc with Pburn.
Boot computer using Puppy Linux Live Disc
Power up Windows computer. Put Live Disc in optical drive.
Depending on severity of damage to Windows computer you may perform any one of the following actions in order to boot Puppy Linux:
- Reboot normally.
- Shut down normally (or otherwise).
- Press reset button
- Power down
- Unplug computer, plug in computer and then power up computer.
After Puppy Linux boots click once on the hard drive icon located in the lower left hand corner of the desktop.
Note: All drives have an icon in the lower left hand corner of the desktop.
Copy Data With ROX-Filer
After you click hard drive icon ROX-Filer will display contents of your Windows hard drive.
Note: When hard drive is mounted (a.k.a. ready for use) its icon will display an additional graphic superimposed over the hard drive icon.
Using ROX-Filer navigate to your files or folders and copy them to flash drive, external hard drive or floppy (if capacity is suitable).
Note: If an external drive is plugged in at boot an additional icon in the shape of a flash drive will appear on the desktop just to the right of any internal hard drives.
Note: If an external drive is plugged in after boot an additional icon in the shape of a flash drive will appear on the desktop just to the right of any internal hard drives.
No hard drive icon present on the desktop may indicate any of the following conditions:
- Hard drive is unplugged
- Hard drive cable has failed.
- Hard drive has failed
- Mother board’s hard drive controller has failed
- BIOS setting is incorrect
- BIOS battery has failed
- BIOS has failed
- Puppy Linux does not recognize the hard drive
You may use any functional internal or external drive(s) to copy files or folders to by using ROX-Filer File Manager.
Copy data with Pburn
Use pBurn to copy your files and folders to removable media such as CD, DVD or Blue-Ray disc.
- Right click optical drive icon in lower left corner of desktop and select "Unmount".
- Remove Live Disc
- Place blank CD or DVD in optical drive
- Go to Menu > Multimedia > pBurn
- In the top of the pBurn window click radio button for Burn Data.
- In the left pane click hard-drive and then press Enter key to view contents.
- Continue navigating to files or folders you wish to burn (a.k.a. copy) to removable media by selecting folders and pressing the Enter key.
- In the left pane right click on files or folders to select them. After selection they will appear in the right pane.
- In the upper right corner of the pBurn window click Burn button (button with flames).
- In next dialog click on radio button for Close disc.
- Leave the default radio button selection set to On the fly. Now click Burn button (button with flames).
- If an appropriate selection is not already selected then from Mediatype field click dropdown and select either CD, DVD or Blue-Ray.
- Click Burn button (button with flames).
- When burn completes select either: Save log, Repeat burn action, Verify burn, or Finished.
- When you click Finished button disc is ejected.
Note: Before you select Finished you may optionally select Verify to confirm that the data burned to disc matches source data.
Note: Data is not always recoverable regardless of technique.
